Top 4 Styling Tips For Creating Incredible Kids Spaces.

Kids rooms are an area in your home that you can have a little fun with, these rooms are typically small, but they must be mighty. Here, a few tips and tricks for designing spaces for the smallest of family members.

Tip No. 01 | Keep it earthy - even when using colour!

When it comes to designing a room, Sarah Langstaff, an experienced stylist at Studio Lifestyling, believes in creating a foundation that stands the test of time. However, she also understands the importance of adding pops of colour to infuse personality into the space. Once the major furniture pieces are in place, Sarah suggests playing with textiles and layers to bring out the character of the room. She emphasises the power of colour in this process and explores softer variations. For instance, Barbie pink may transform into a subtle nude pink, while dinosaur green might become a soothing moss shade.

When it comes to choosing a paint colour with an earthy vibe, Resene Paints is our go-to choice. One of the standout features of their palette is their umber tint that adds a touch of muted earthiness to their paint range.

The perfect rug for a kids room

When picking items like the rug, choose something timeless that you would love in your room too- we love the Armadillo&Co rugs on our projects- we particularly love the braid wheels in kids rooms as the round shape softens all the squared edges in these rooms. When it comes to choosing rugs for kids, it's best to opt for simplicity instead of intricate patterns that they may outgrow and we save the patterns for other areas in the room- this is an absolute TOP Design Tip! By keeping the design clean and minimalistic, you ensure that the room will remain timeless.

Tip No. 02| Incorporate Pattern, Texture & Character

“I like to think about mixing pattern and texture in a kids’ room,” Sarah explains. Add wall murals (these are great if renting) and even consider a fun patterned wallpaper ,” says Sarah. “Thinking about the colour palette and how it works together is what you need to pay attention to,” but don’t be afraid to be playful with patterns in a kid-centric space.

Don’t forget about their bathroom and add some personality into this space too- we love all the fun bathmats by Sage & Clare and theyre not just for kids! Sarah says “I have one in my bathroom- I love the them!”

Girls Rooms

On the bed, gather a visually cohesive set of pillows, quilts, blankets and sheets that are interchangeable and then allow the kids to dress their bed themselves. In this image above we used bedding from Kmart and cushions from Style Rev, Kip & Co & Life Interiors. NOTE: Remember to always use the next size up of quilts on your beds- so a single bed would need a double quilt and a double bed would need a queen quilt and so on …

A great option for kids room are wall murals as they can be easily removed as the kids outgrow them- check out Olive et Oriel’s range of wallpapers

Tip No. 03 | Infuse Personality

“We absolutely adore infusing our spaces with personality, and as Sarah Says “when it comes to kids rooms, we believe it's the ultimate playground for creativity”. The beauty of designing a child's space is that you can indulge in endless possibilities while still ensuring functionality remains a top priority.

You would be amazed at the tremendous use your child will develop for a generously-sized floor cushion placed in their sanctuary. These floor cushions, thoughtfully designed by the talented Rachel Castle, easily make for an impeccable and vey cool addition to your Childs room.

Art is not only a great way to add personality in a room, but it also holds the power to transform a space. That's why we absolutely adore the exquisite hand-stitched embroideries on linen created by the talented artist, Rachel Castle. And the best part? They can even be customised specifically for your child, allowing you to incorporate their favourite line from a song, or a cherished ‘saying’ into the artwork. The possibilities are truly endless when it comes to infusing a touch of personalisation and warmth into your child's room and so why settle for ordinary.

Tip No. 04 | Contain the Clutter

Kids attract so much stuff and so incorporating shelving, drawers (more drawers the better!) baskets, containers and decorative boxes for kids spaces. “And you know what? There can never be too many storage solutions”. There just needs to be a pretty place to store everything and so storage is key” Sarah suggests.
